8 Things I Learned from Writing and Publishing my First Book

Many people question the journey and what I have learned while on the journey. Today I'm going to share 8 things I learned so far and maybe this post might inspire someone to get up and write a book.

1. The Intro is the Hardest.

When writing, you come up with this fascinating picture in your head and basically, you go for it. That sound easy, I know. Finding the perfect Intro to bring that picture in your mind alive? Not soo easy. You want an Intro that will catch your readers and keep them interested. Sometimes it seems near impossible but when you find it, you'll know. Remember, at the end of the day, nobody will accept what you wont.

2. Writing isn't Hard.

Most people grow up hating English in school because of the large amount of reading and writing involved. Think about it for a minute. You know whats going on in your head better than anyone else. Your thoughts and opinions are yours. Not everyone will see it the way you do but you are in charge of your story.

3. Writers Block is Real!

During my days of writing poetry, I've experienced a few writers block moments. Sometimes for days and others for weeks. Its a HUGE buzz kill believe me. While writing this book however, my blocks were even more extreme. Sometimes i find myself knowing what i want to say or where i want to go in the story but i just cant write it. Or times, I cant even use my imagination. I sit with my book and pen and don't accomplish anything. Find ways to overcome this. Don't over work yourself. Know when to take breaks, Go out and get some air, take a swim. Never write on a clustered mind.

4. Time = Perfection.

How long does it take to write a book? It all depends on how much time you are going to invest in writing that book. It can take you anywhere from maybe 6 months to 2 years maybe more. Whether you choose to write part time or full time , always remember to give your book genuine "You" time.

5. Don't make it Hard: Love it? Then, Trust it!

At the beginning of my book I remember having doubts and the urge to change many things because I wasn't trusting the big picture in my head. Just like a real life scenario, we don't trust ourselves and find ourselves going in directions that we don't want to. Then we say, "I should have followed my mind or heart." Classic line right? For me, it kept boiling down to my original story and to me yes, it was perfect and I loved it!

6. Publishing is actually EASY!

I've always thought about how and when I would publish my book. I was the scary ending for me not just because people was going to read my work. I was scary because of the genre as well as the path my book would take in regards to success. Should I find an Agent or should I Self Publish? Questions, questions. After weighing my options, I decided I want my story to be mine. I didn't want to have to change it based on what anyone else thinks. I want you to read the story the way I want it to be told. I self published through amazon. Best decision I've made. The process is fast, easy and well guided.

7. Publishing isn't the End.

Finally your book is up for Pre-order or it's live and available. You feel good and accomplished. It doesn't end there. Get up. Give yourself a pat on the back and continue full force ahead. Advertise, Promote, Get your book out there.

8. Everyone should try it at least once.

Yes, I said it.

The writing journey will be different for everyone and we all will learn different lessons on that journey.

Embrace the journey and see where it takes you.
