Chapter 1 - Becka - Background

I’ve never been a big fan of driving on the highway for two years of my life after the death of my parents. I can still remember that horrific night I was told my parents were in the accident that took both their lives. I can remember seeing my dad lying lifeless on the cold streets of Peters Ville and my mom halfway through the windshield of our black tinted Lincoln Navigator. There were flashing lights everywhere and people gathered at the scene in numbers. I remember dropping to my knees beside my dad as the tears ran down my cheeks. It was horrible. The two people I held so dear to me were gone. After thirty years of marriage, my parents known as Mr. and Mrs. Johnson were the happiest couple in our neighborhood. Don’t get me wrong, there were ups and downs, but regardless they always worked out their problems. After my parents passed, we locked up our parents’ house and my sisters moved into my home with me on the west side and continued striving for the best. It was rough at first but we made do with what we had. Janice was then eighteen and attending college while Taylor was fifteen in High School about to graduate. It was kind of crazy at first. We all got emotional about it from time to time, they were our parents. Neighbors from around the block started paying more attention to us, started to treat us nice all of a sudden. As much as that was “nice” of them, I didn’t give a fuck, I didn’t need their help. It’s funny how people could wait until someone is dead to act like they really care. My sister’s and I were doing just fine without them. Janice got a job while attending college. She worked at the library in between her classes which is where Taylor got her job by recommendation. Before Taylor started working in the library, she came down to my office after school and assisted with some office duties. She was all about working to help out with the bills and groceries, but she was still young. At that point, it was better to let her work for me than any other jerk in Peters Ville who would take advantage of her.
